Skater Girl

A feminist, activist series

2025

Yasmin Akbay

“Skater Girl” is a 2025 pop-art inspired series, showcasing what it can be like for women to participate in heavily male-dominated sports such as skateboarding.

Studies show that women are less likely to participate in skateboarding due to safety concerns, with the remote locations of skate parks and the need for urban, concrete environments for street skateboarding, being major deterrents.

From personal experience as a young, female skateboarder, I can confirm that the fears we face as women in this field are rife and universal. I have spoken with countless other girls, women and queer skateboarders about this topic, and each of them were able to inform me of at least two instances where they have been continually stared at, objectified, felt generally unsafe or have been harassed whilst skateboarding.

Inspired by anti-establishment, zine and punk culture, this is a series dedicated to women in skating, and is just the start of my work on this.
